I have been out of the food market for several years – and therefore have not followed this area.
Our beagles were primarily fed homemade food – I did this, among other things, because they maintained their weight better. Besides that, it was popular among the beagles – and they kept a close eye on it when I was about to make a new portion of food.
Therefore, I must say that I was a bit shocked when I happened to stumble upon this: DCM – In July 2018, the FDA announcedExternal Link Disclaimer that it had begun investigating reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy
DCM is a serious heart disease that primarily affects large dog breeds – but it has also been seen in smaller breeds – including Cocker Spaniels and Beagles.
My husband joins an American forum via Facebook – and there is talk about this type of disease among beagles,
In short, it is a disease that enlarges the heart and makes the valves thinner so that the heart cannot pump blood properly. Most dogs die from the disease within a given period.
The cause must be found in grain-free food – which is popular among many dog owners. I have fed my beagles with such types for periods. But when none of my beagles worked on this type of food, they returned to regular food again – and later switched back to homemade food.
I am of course happy today that I chose to skip grain-free food.
If I were to get a dog again – it goes without saying that it should have regular food intended for dogs – and later switch back to homemade food.
Via the link you can read which types of grain-free food are the worst – and yes, I have used the Acana food – oh, I am completely horrified that I could think of giving my beagles that brand – which is quite popular among dog owners.
Imagine that food manufacturers put all sorts of junk in their grain-free products – and something we humans consider harmless – Lentils, peas, and more similar things – can be deadly to our dogs.
